Limb lengthening surgery is a procedure that aims to lengthen the arms or legs using the distraction osteogenesis method. This method benefits people with limb length discrepancies caused by various factors such as injury, fracture, congenital conditions or crush injuries.
Limb-lengthening surgery is typically recommended for individuals who have a limb-length discrepancy of at least two inches (5 centimeters) or more. This can be caused by many factors, including congenital conditions, such as achondroplasia or dwarfism, or acquired conditions, such as bone fractures or infections.
There are a lot of medical benefits that come with limb lengthening. It's going to help you orthopedically and overall, that helps your overall well-being and your overall health, but it doesn't change anything genetically and it doesn't change any potential risks that you can have from the gene later on in life.
As a general rule, our limb lengthening patients cannot add more than six inches to their height - and being six inches taller cannot be achieved in a single surgery. Our patients need to have one procedure to lengthen the femurs above the knee and a second procedure to lengthen the tibias.
Initially you will need to adjust to the new length of your muscles but it shouldn't take you long. Also the muscles will be initially weaker but with exercising you will regain the strength.

During this time, we generally do not recommend strenuous physical activity, including sports. Once our surgeon has given you the go-ahead for more activity, a gradual return to sport is recommended. Physical therapy plays a vital role in rebuilding strength and mobility.
Everyone has a different experience with limb extension. In general, the first inch is the easiest and then it gets a little more difficult. Once the initial discomfort from the surgery has passed, many of our patients do not need any pain medication during the lengthening procedure.

Our patients seeking limb lengthening are usually between the ages of 14 and 30, but the procedure can also be performed later in life.
The recovery time will depend on how long you want to lengthen the bone or whether you lengthen more than one bone. Most of our patients can walk without crutches within 2-3 months after surgery. Recovery usually speeds up after the bone has grown to the length you want.
